What are the three types of nafs (self)?
Humankind has three types of nafs. One nafs, nafs-i-amarah, guides the person toward wrongdoing and disobedience to Allah. The second type of nafs, nafs-i-lawama, prevents from the person from evil deeds, sins, crimes, and disobedience to Allah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم . The third type of nafs, nafs-i-mutmainnah, is the satisfied nafs that a person gets when they have lived a life of goodness and obedience to Allah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم .
