Al-Hayyi (The Ever-Living One, The Eternal ),

Living forever / ever existence is the great quality of Allah and this Attribute is essential for other attributes, for e.g. The Supreme Being is the Owner of all power and is All-Seeing, all-Hearing and All-Knowing. All of these Attributes are related with life and we know and understand that the Supreme Being (Allah All-Mighty) is Ever-Existent. Similarly these Attributes of Al-Hayyi and Al-Qayyoom are also essential for the existence of the universe. So Allah is the Sovereign who has been living since ever and shall live forever. All of the creatures shall die at the end of their life-term but there is no death for Allah. Again we in our life do become drowsy and enjoy sleep every day/night. But Allah is such a Unique Being WHO has neither sleep nor drowsiness. The meaning of Aayatul-kursee (verse 255 of surah Al-Baqarah given above) explains some of the meaning of the Attributes of Al-Hayyi and Al-Qayyoom.

We all human beings and other creatures are dependent and in need of help at every step. If we start seeking help from other beings like us then it means that we take support from those who are very weak and have temporary existence. So they will die soon. But when we trust Allah, and seek help and support from HIM, then surely we trusted and relied upon the Ever-Existent and Uniquely Strong Being. Thus we shall never be disappointed. Therefore, Only Allah All-Mighty deserves our worship and none else. The All-Mighty Allah Who is ever-Existent to cherish us with numerous blessings and is always present and awake to hear our supplications and give us relief from any kind of trouble has the right to be obeyed and worshipped.

Therefore, Allah said in the surah Al-Furqaan verse 58;

Wa tawakkal ala Al-Hayyi-lladhee laa yamoot…..(and put your trust in the ONE Who is Living and does not die)
*************************************************************************
Translation of the full verse 58 of surah Al-Furqaan is:

  1. And put your trust (O Muhammad SAW) in the Ever Living One Who dies not, and glorify His Praises, and Sufficient is He as the All-Knower of the sins of His slaves;
    *************************************************************************

Surah Ghaafir verse 65 (Translation only):

  1. He is the Living (One): There is no god but He: Call upon Him, giving Him sincere devotion. Praise is to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!
    **************************************************************************************************

So any living creation/creature that will die, and any dead thing which is not alive, and the non-living things all do not deserve our worship. Only Allah WHO is Ever-Living has the right to be worshipped.
